ASFI is committed to uplifting finance sector capability to develop the mindsets, behaviours and skills needed to power the transformation required to deliver sustainable finance commitments and ambitions.

Developing an Australian Sustainable Finance Capability Framework

The 2022 Progress Tracker highlighted the strong demand for sustainable finance skills, the shortage of skilled professionals, and the challenges financial institutions across the sector are facing in the recruitment and retention of the staff needed to deliver on their sustainable finance commitments and ambitions. To overcome this, ASFI is working with key stakeholders and a recently established Capability Reference Group to develop Australia’s first Sustainable Finance Capability Framework. This framework demonstrates the key skills needed for individuals to perform various roles in sustainable finance.

It is hoped that this framework will be used by financial institutions, universities and individuals to inform learning and development plans and activities, to accelerate the adoption of sustainable finance and the positive outcomes it contributes to.

Sustainable Finance Capability Reference Group

In August 2023, ASFI sought EOIs from the public to join its Sustainable Finance Capability Reference Group.

The Group will provide expert advice to inform the development of a sustainable finance capability framework, describing key capabilities required to develop sustainable finance leadership and accelerate the transition.

Outcomes of the Group will be shared mid-2024, and Group participants can be found here.

Please contact Jackson with any questions.

ASFI is pleased to invite feedback on the draft Australian Sustainable Finance Capability Framework. This feedback will inform the final version of the Framework, which we aim to release mid-2024.

Public Consultation on the Australian Sustainable Finance Capability Framework

ASFI’s 2023 Progress Tracker indicated that as little as 7% of financial professionals have green skills, lagging other industries critical to achieving global sustainability targets. Australia also has a lower concentration of green talent in the finance sector than countries such as US, Germany, UK & Canada. Changing these statistics is a key priority for ASFI.

As part of doing so, we are leading the development of Australia’s first Sustainable Finance Capability Framework (the Framework), identifying key capabilities required to develop sustainable finance workforce and leadership to accelerate the transition.

We are pleased to invite feedback on the draft Framework. This feedback will inform the final version of the Framework, which we aim to release mid-2024.
