Large quantities of metals and minerals are needed for the global transition but mining them is emissions intensive and can have adverse environmental and social impacts. At present, lack of consensus on ‘green’ mining standards is limiting the availability of sustainable finance for this sector.
The Australian Sustainable Finance Taxonomy will be the first globally to set standards for the mining sector. This will help financial institutions to assess whether proposed mining investments are 1.5 degree aligned and meet strong environmental and social benchmarks. It will also allow miners to demonstrate the green credentials of their product, supporting their access to both sustainable finance and key markets. The Australian taxonomy will also provide guidance for appropriate engagement with First Nations communities on whose land many of these activities will take place.
This session will explore the role of standards like those being developed in the Australian taxonomy in supporting flows of capital towards green mining activities and opportunities for collaboration with other international jurisdictions.
