ASFI welcomes Government's Sustainable Finance Roadmap

ASFI welcomes the release of the Australian Government’s Sustainable Finance Roadmap. Clarity on the next steps and priorities for progressing Australia’s sustainable finance policy will help tackle greenwashing and encourage the credibility and growth of sustainable finance markets in Australia.

We look forward to working with Government, our members, and broader partners to support the development of key policies including: sustainability product labelling, corporate transition plan guidance and next steps for Australia’s taxonomy.

ASFI is partnering with the Government to lead the initial development of the Australian sustainable finance taxonomy (Roadmap Priority 2) - which is currently open for consultation for the first three sectors. We are also pleased to partner with the Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs to support Australia’s ambitions to be a global leader on sustainable finance (Roadmap Priority 10).

ASFI CEO Kristy Graham said:

“The Government’s Sustainable Finance Roadmap provides welcome clarity on the next steps in Australia’s sustainable finance agenda.

“Progress over the past 12 months in introducing mandatory climate disclosures and developing an Australian taxonomy is helping to ensure Australia can properly manage climate risk and capitalise on the renewable energy superpower opportunity. Further reform, including product labelling and corporate transition guidance will further Australia’s ability to attract international capital for the transition.

“We welcome acknowledgement in the Roadmap of Government investments in the building blocks for sustainable finance frameworks for nature and climate adaptation and resilience. Building out Australia’s sustainable finance frameworks beyond climate mitigation will be important for managing broader sustainability related risks and keeping pace with international developments.

“Recent progress in the Government’s sustainable finance agenda means Australia is increasingly positioned to demonstrate global leadership and influence the development of regional and international sustainable finance standards, particularly in areas like transition finance.

“ASFI is pleased to partner with the Australian Government on development of the taxonomy, and in Australia’s international engagement including with key partners such as Indonesia.”
